What does emotional intelligence have to do with success for law firms, lawyers and leaders? Apparently, quite a bit.
The Rocky Mountain Legal Marketing Association recently hosted a program on emotional intelligence at law firms, presented by Dr. Laura Belsten of CEO Partnership.
Janet Ellen Raasch, a writer and ghostwriter who works with lawyers and law firms, shared a synopsis of the presentation at her blog, Constant Content.
Research by the Center of Creative Leadership shows that almost half of all executive fail at their positions within two years. The reason they fail is not a lack of technical competence or cognitive ability, but a lack of emotional intelligence.
“Research shows that organizations that recognize and cultivate emotional intelligence are more productive and more successful at recruitment and retention,” said Belsten. “They are also more profitable. In law firms I have worked with, high-EQ partners are significantly more profitable than low-EQ partners.
“The good news is that lawyers (and other professional services providers) can learn to understand and use emotional intelligence to manage themselves and their relationships with others,” said Dr. Laura Belsten.
If you’re curious where you might stand, the synopsis (which you can download from Constant Content as a Word Document) also highlights Belston’s Emotional Intelligence Profile, which measures individuals for 24 competencies linked to emotional intelligence and success.
